Various Mysteries - Archives Vol. 3 - 5
Favored Nations 2013

Vai Archives is a series of discs that can contain
anything from minor contributions that Steve has
made to various other artists’ records, to bootlegs,
B-sides, vault tapes and re-shaped extrapolations
of his past catalogs.
Archives Vol. 3 is a compilation of Steve’s bonus
tracks featured on Japanese releases of his CDs,
along with promotional tracks, songs featured on
other albums and unreleased/demo tracks.

Archives Vol. 4 is a collection of songs Steve has
contributed to other projects and records.
Originally only available through Vai.com as part of
the Secret Jewel Box, these albums were re-released
by Favored Nations in 2005.

Various tracks of Vol.3 and Vol.4 are amalgamated
into the digital only release of “Archives Vol 3.5″.

THE 7TH SONG original artwork was painted on a stone, and it's a very representative work of Ciruelo's technique called Petropictos, the art of painting on stone, in which the rocks, which are only painted, look like they have been sculpted. To achieve this realistic effect, he uses the natural relief of the stone surface transforming it into a three dimensional figure just by painting on it with oils. In 1995, when Steve phoned Ciruelo to commission him a painting for "The 7th Song" Ciruelo was developing this technique so he proposed doing a Petropicto instead of a regular painting on canvas.

A complete step by step of this piece's process can be found in the book Luz the Art of Ciruelo.

ART FOR THE STEVE VAI ALBUM THE ELUSIVE LIGHT AND SOUND - 1998

The Elusive Light and Sound, Vol. 1
This painting is included within the book Luz, the Art of Ciruelo

This painting portraits Steve's head exploding
with light and sound and it's featured within
the EL&S booklet.

The Secret Jewel Box was initially released with three
CDs in the box, with the remaining releases coming
separately throughout the next couple of years.
It's available almost exclusively through Steve's official
website, Vai.com. The Secret Jewel Box is largely
comprised of unreleased material, and music from
dozens of different records (many out of print).
Ciruelo was commissioned to paint this piece in 1998
by Steve who had seen a series of illustrations in his
first artbook, published in 1990, and liked the effect
of this new marbling technique.

In that book Ciruelo said:

"I especially like to add strange textures to the skin,
like marble or stone, because in this way I am adding
an aesthetic attraction to the human skin. So, often
I start to work the figure on a blotted ink background.
I shape the body like a sculptor, airbrushing in the
shadows and depths, then with a hand brush introduce
the highlights and exalting the texture of the stone.
Essentialy what I aim for is to give these figures the
appearance of sculptures while remaining alive"
